kaisen. the opportune moment - movement viii

Dov Waterman and Me Raabenstein are the two musical cohorts behind Kaisen. Both musicians are accomplished experts in their chosen musical fields, and this collaboration brings out the best in both. Me is the brains behind the Nonine record label, as well as an ambient composer, and Dov is a skilled and multifaceted musical jack of all trades specializing in the piano. The collaboration of these two musically disparate individuals is as unlikely as it is obvious. The pairing of such diverging musical minds has the potential to cause schizophrenic and unbalanced music; however, communication of the mind and soul transpired, allowing Dov and Me to work together with such harmony, thus creating an album that neither of them could have produced single-handedly.

Yellow Ostrich - Bread

Yellow Ostrich started out as a vehicle for the solo bedroom ramblings of Wisconsin native Alex Schaaf before blossoming into a full-fledged rock band, based in Brooklyn and draped in breathless buzz. But unlike, say, its fellow Badgers in Bon Iver — whose forthcoming album hits like a tidal wave of lush, gorgeous production — Yellow Ostrich retains its taste for the simple and stripped-down. It may have just become a trio with the recent addition of Jon Natchez, a bassist/horn player from the bands Beirut and Bishop Allen, but its songs still clatter and charm the way they did when Yellow Ostrich consisted of Schaaf standing on a stage and looping his sounds, Andrew Bird-style.

In an interview with C.B.Liddell of Metropolis magazine he described the album as "the first album I've done that is kind of introspective rather than escapist." In the same interview, he also talked about "stepping away from big loud guitars" as the album is stylistically more diverse and less rock-oriented than previous work.

Emmy the Great - A Woman, A Woman, A Century of Sleep

Emma-Lee Moss (born c. 1984), known by her stage name Emmy the Great, is a London-based singer-songwriter. She has released two albums, First Love and Virtue.
Moss was born in Hong Kong to an English father and a Chinese mother. Being into music from a young age, she would take the train to her nearest Tower Records so that she could buy the only non-Chinese music they had and, as a result, she got into bands such as Weezer, The Smashing Pumpkins and The Lemonheads. While in Hong Kong, she attended primary school in Kowloon. She emigrated with her family to London at the age of 12 and grew up in the English Shires - at one point living in a canal boat in Oxford.
She has performed as a member of the indie folk group Lightspeed Champion, acting as their vocalist for a brief period in 2007 alongside Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine. She then went back to focus on her work as a solo artist under the adopted nickname Emmy the Great, which she says came about when "I wanted to be a backing singer and I wanted to have something to hand to people... ‘Emmy’ is a name they called me at university, which I hated, and ‘the Great’ I added on because I hated ‘Emmy’ so much."
Her second album, Virtue, was released on June 13, 2011, while the MP3 blog RCRD LBL helped promote the album on April 18, 2011, when they released a free download of the track "A Woman, a Woman, a Century Of Sleep".

In 2006 Hemming moved to London to work with multi-instrumentalist and producer Christian Hardy; the pair have subsequently built a live band drawn from members of Brighton's Willkommen Collective and further afield, notably Mike Siddell who previously played violin with Hope of the States and currently performs with The Miserable Rich, Lightspeed Champion and Troubles. Other members of the band play with The Miserable Rich, Sons of Noel and Adrian and more.
The Leisure Society have been recipients of considerable critical acclaim since the release of their first single (see Discography), being dubbed the English answer to popular U.S acts such as Grizzly Bear, Department of Eagles and Fleet Foxes.
In interviews on their recent European tours Nick Hemming & Christian Hardy have alluded to a darker, more expansive second record which they began recording in January 2010.

X-Wife - Keep on Dancing

X-Wife is a rock band from Portugal. Current members are: João Vieira (vocals/guitar), Fernando Sousa (bass), Rui Maia (Synthesizers/ drums/drum machine).
In the early 90's João Vieira was involved in a few bands, namely Centerfold where he handled vocal duties. The genre could be loosely defined as Britpop but none of the bands ever got a record deal. In the mid 90's Vieira went to London to study graphic design. There he got involved with several bands and even formed another band under the name Centerfold. Unlike the original Centerfold, this band was mainly a 70's glam rock thing. As with the first incarnation of Centerfold, little success was achieved. Still while in London, together with a friend (Stuart), he founded what was known as the Club Kitten where he DJ'ed under the nickname DJ Kitten. The club soon got the attention of the British press.
In January 2001 Vieira returned to Portugal, and set up a new Club Kitten in the Triplex disco in the city of Porto where he continues to perform under the name DJ Kitten. As in London, Club Kitten was a great success and DJ Kitten now performs all around the country at clubs, festivals and events. Around the same time as he set up Club Kitten, and after many long conversations about music, Vieira and Fernando Sousa (at the time in a band called Stealing Orchestra), decided to start jamming together. After meeting Rui Maia in a bar, X-Wife was complete (the official date of birth of X-Wife is March 2002). Starting from a set of demos that Vieira recorded on a minidisc while in London, the band began their rehearsals. In one of those rehearsals a record label (Nortesul) manager showed up (on the recommendation of a mutual friend) and two months later a record deal was presented to the trio. In 2003 they released the Rockin' Rio EP, which includes the tracks "Rockin' Rio", “Eno” and “We Are” . The track "Rockin' Rio" received considerable radio airplay and "Action Plan" received massive radio airplay despite the fact it wasn't released as a single. The album got good reviews from the press, and a tour of clubs and summer festivals followed. On the 10th April 2006 they released Side Effects, with "Ping-Pong" selected as the first single. "Ping-Pong"'s excellent video clip was directed by Kalle Kotila & Malakias (las palmas films). "Realize" was the second single taken from Side Effects, with André Cepêda, directing the video clip. Side Effects was released in Spain by PuPilo Records in 2007. X-Wife's third album, Are you ready for the blackout? was released in late September 2008, and debuted in the top 25 in its domestic market.

13 & God - Death Minor

13 & God is an American and German electronic collaboration group between Weilheim, Germany-based The Notwist and Oakland, California-based anticon members Themselves. The group is signed both to anticon and Alien Transistor. They are joined live by Jordan Dalrymple who now plays Dax Pierson's parts following a 2005 Subtle tour accident which left Dax quadriplegic. As of 2010, Jordan has officially joined, and has been contributing in the studio. Console also appears to no longer be a contributing member of the group.
The band's name stems from the concept of the 12 apostles and Jesus Christ forming a group that comprises 13 mortal men as well as God. Distinguishing between The Notwist and Themselves in the context of which group is the '13' and which is 'God' is thus disingenuous; in the example above, God is inherently contained within the '13', creating a symbiotic relationship so strong it is unable to be severed. As 13 & God are not a Christian group, but do explore elements of philosophy, spirituality and existentialism, the name 13 & God is generally considered to be more of a reflection of those elements, as well as the concept of 'identity' itself.
In a recent interview with Pitchfork, Doseone was quoted as saying "in 2010 there will be a brand new shiny 13 & G record out in the world." On the third of February 2011, a new album entitled "Own Your Ghost" was announced to be released on Anticon on May 17, 2011. The album is set to feature ten tracks, including a song written and performed on the 2007 tour, entitled "Sure as Debt". This announcement was accompanied by a preview clip of the song "Armoured Scarves" from the album.

APPLAUSE: "Hope you're Better"

They appeared from out of nowhere, yet within a year Applause have managed to carve out a niche for themselves on the Parisian scene. Their first EP, including the impeccable single Lighthouse, was a frequent feature on the airwaves and created some ripples in the music press. The Franco-Belgian group, who are based in Brussels but formed in Paris, have hit on a winning combination, with a superb lead voice that some liken to Jeff Buckley, resplendent compositions that sit between white soul and hot rock, and a sprinkling of mystery. The group’s French singer Nicolas looks back: "The group started in 2006 after a concert by Néry (Ed’s note: former singer with Les VRP) at La Maroquinerie. His musicians were looking for a singer for a new project and I was looking for a group. It was perfect timing."

Patrick Wolf - The Days

Patrick Wolf (born Patrick Denis Apps on 30 June 1983) is an English singer-songwriter from South London. Patrick utilises a wide variety of instruments in his music, most commonly the ukulele, piano and viola. Known for combining electronic sampling with classical instruments, Wolf's styles range from romantic folk to techno-pop.

He started his musical education with violin lessons and church choirs and made his first theremin at age eleven, and first began recording songs with his violin, voice, and car boot sale organs on a four-track tape recorder at age twelve. At fourteen, he joined and performed with pop art collective Minty. Two years later, he dropped his music A-Levels, which he was studying at Davies Laing and Dick Sixth Form College off Bond Street, and left home. During this period, as well as working in Super Lovers clothing store in Covent Garden, Wolf earned money from busking in a string quartet and formed a group called 'Maison Crimineaux', a noisy trio built on destructive ethics around white noise and pop music. He also continued to write and record his own material. A Maison Crimineaux gig in Paris was attended by electronic maestro Kristian Robinson (aka Capitol K), who would then go on to release Wolf's debut album Lycanthropy.
On 6 April 2011, Wolf announced via his website, that the release date for Lupercalia is now 20 June 2011 worldwide (excluding USA).

CESARIA EVORA & LURA - Moda Bô

Cesária Évora (born 27 August 1941) is a Cape Verdean popular singer.
Her bright voice and physical charms were soon noticed, but her hope of a singing career remained unsatisfied. A Cape Verdean women’s group and the singer Bana both took her to Lisbon to cut a few tracks, but the recordings failed to catch the ear of a producer. In 1988, a young Frenchman of Cape Verdean extraction invited her to Paris to make a record. At 47, she had nothing to lose. Having never seen Paris, she agreed...
Nicknamed the "barefoot diva" for performing without shoes, Évora is perhaps the best internationally known practitioner of "morna."

A Portuguese-speaking artist, Lura stands at the crossroads of Portuguese and Cape Verdean culture. Born in Lisbon in 1975 (the year of her country’s independence), she remains strongly attached to her family’s native land and the culture of Cape Verde. At the age of seventeen, she was already dancing and singing backing vocals for Juka, a Sao Tomé zouk singer. Giving up her swimming studies, she took the plunge into the musical deep end and soon acquired a reputation as a singer in her own right. In 1996, she recorded a first urban album of r&b and Afro-Portuguese zouk.
A well-received duet with Angolan singer Bonga, then partnerships with her fellow countrymen Tito Paris and Paulinho Vieira caught the ear of José Da Silva, head of Lusafrica and Cesaria Evora’s producer, and he signed her to his label.

The Doomed Bird of Providence - Fedicia Exine

Recounting stories from the dusty, obscure corners of colonial times, The Doomed Bird of Providence set off on an exploration of early Australian history, darkly probing its more abject and harrowing aspects. The resulting music is brooding, dramatic and heavily indebted to Ennio Morricone, Jacques Brel, Scott Walker and the English Folk Revival. Buttressed by accordion, ukulele, bass, guitar and violin, singer Mark Kluzek rants and laments the death and degeneracy of settlers and convicts alike in this hostile, unrelenting environment. The Doomed Bird of Providence shed light on obscure corners, to mythologise and empower previously hidden stories. And to bring forth all that is disturbing, mysterious and tragic.
'Fedicia Exine' is about the little known daughter of a convict, Maria, who was a slave in British Honduras when she was transported for murder and who later married a whaler. The song attempts to create a sense of identity for the mysterious girl, for whom there are no records after birth, from the geography of Hobart.
The band has grown into a five piece including Daniel Merrill (Dead Rat Orchestra) on violin and Richard Acton (formerly of Limn) on guitar. Will Ever Pray also features the talents of Rachel Laurence (Viola) and Tony Ramsey (Guitar).

Seapony - What You See

Taking their cue from the indie pop bands of yore (particularly twee pop acts like the Softies, Talulah Gosh, and the Field Mice), Seapony sound every bit as dreamy, soft, and sweet as their name implies. Seapony formed in 2010, when Danny Rowland and Jen Weidl moved to Seattle. They teamed up with bassist Ian Brewer, Rowland's childhood friend and former bandmate, and the band was born. The newly minted trio wasted no time in recording an album's worth of tunes. Shortly after posting a handful of finished tracks online, the band was picked up by then-fledgling label Double Denim Records; Seapony's debut 7" single, Dreaming, was released on that label soon after. The band's profile enjoyed a healthy boost thanks to the single; by the time 2011 rolled around, Dreaming was featured on Pitchfork and made its way into the rotation on college radio stations. Seapony played their very first live gig soon after, rounding out their live lineup with the help of their friend John on drums. The band's debut full-length album, Go with Me, was released on Hardly Art in 2011. (By Margaret Reges)

Peter Murphy - crème de la crème

Peter John Murphy (born 11 July 1957) is an English rock vocalist. He was the vocalist of the rock group Bauhaus, and later went on to release a number of solo albums, such as Deep and Love Hysteria. Thin, with prominent cheekbones, a baritone voice, and a penchant for gloomy poetics, Murphy is often called the "Godfather of Goth."
On February 11, 2011 the official Peter Murphy site announced that Murphy would tour a 29-date jaunt across North America to support his upcoming album Ninth, which had a new release date of June 6 and 7 for the UK and US respectively after Murphy signed on to Nettwerk Music Group's label roster on March 2. In further support of the upcoming album, Murphy released the song "I Spit Roses" as a digital single through online retailers on March 22, as well as single "Seesaw Sway" on May 23. Murphy will also be embarking on an 8-date in-store performance and signing tour beginning in New York on June 7 and ending on June 29 in Los Angeles.
